About The Family with Two Front Doors

The real Nomi, aged 13

This story, set in the 1920s, is based on the real childhood of Anna Ciddor’s grandmother, Nomi.

Open the front cover and you pitch straight into the everyday life of the Rabinovitches. You join them for breakfast, and listen to the samovar bubbling while ten-year-old Nomi trails her long hair in the bowl of oily herring, and baby Bluma drops soggy, chewed bagel on the floor. You shop with them at the market, and watch eight-year-old Yakov struggle to carry home a huge fish. You stand with them in the hallway on Beggars’ Thursday, and help them hand out food and coins to the stream of beggars who come in through the open front door. Day by intimate day, you travel with them through the summer, till at last you reach the grand finale of Adina’s wedding...

The real Adina

The style of the book is similar to the ‘Little House’ books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, but the setting is more like ‘Fiddler on the Roof’.
